Food and exercise have been a part of my daily life since I was an early teen. I struggled with food, portion control, weight gain & poor body image, low self-esteem and decreasing energy. My efforts to eat better & exercise more were frustrating, unsuccessful, and completely unsustainable. In my early 20’s, after birthing my 2 children (my true inspirations), I was diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder hypothyroidism. Conventional medicine was prescribed, but was not getting me “there”. I researched & advocated for myself and learned that there was more I could be doing to support my wellness trajectory. A shift to a more open minded perspective on SELF RESPONSIBILITY, personal commitment and consistent efforts paved the way. I was committed to transforming my “chubby” frame without having to deprive myself from food or spend hours at the gym. My intention to be a positive role model to myself and my children was the necessary motivation for change. After years of traditional exercising and fad dieting, I gave up the battle against my body and decided to explore and implement more specific tools that could support my health goals.
To support my personal physical goals and training, I certified as a personal trainer through The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM/2005) & Super Slow, a specialized strength training program, in 2008. Here, I discovered specific exercise techniques that were more appropriate for my body type.
My nutritional journey began when I attended The Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) in 2006. As a graduate from IIN, I learned how whole foods and healthy lifestyle choices could empower me to life my life more fully. My health improved significantly and I began to live in harmony and balance when I stopped eating in fear and learned to find nourishment in higher quality foods. By implementing whole foods, moderate exercise, and a positive outlook, I finally learned how to care for my unique body. I realized that there is no one right approach to health. There are many different theories, which may or may not work based on our INDIVIDUALITY.
